Chayah Series is a painting /drawing series (sumi ink and gouache) currently in progress that utilizes the simple gesture, right to left, as Hebrew and Arabic are written. The strokes are made by filling the page from bottom right to upper left. The arching stroke is the basic mark that is used to compose-construct all characters of the Hebrew alphabet. The final image is composed of these accumulated gestures, echoing the hammering marks of my coppersmithing, their noise; water; landscape, and textural script. The series is dedicated to a young woman named Chaya who died of a brain tumor at nineteen years, after fighting for fifteen months. She died in June 2007 after two surgeries and losing her short term memory. Chaya is the name given to Jewish girls at birth. It means life, or wild animal, and it has biblical references.
