Instant Eruv highlights the DIY nature of Judaism. An eruv is a symbolic Jewish enclosure that extends private space into the public sphere. This allows Orthodox Jews to carry a baby or push a stroller to Synagogue. I see an eruv also as a line in space. Artists like Sol Lewitt, Fred Sandback and Manzoni each found alternative ways to draw lines. Instant eruv allows anyone to make either an eruv or drawing or both.

Schachter is currently curating an exhibition entitled, “Tzitzit: Fiber Art and Jewish Identity” on view from January 29-February 21 at Saint Vincent College, PA.
