If I Worked for 493 Years is an ongoing digital performance art piece where I document each day at work through the eyes of my computer. I am a web designer and stare at the screen for hours. A couple of years ago, I decided to let the computer stare back at me with one image per day, using the built in iphoto camera. I added the audio through researching economic statistics about the decline in the “middle and working class” standard of living in the United States, where right now one, person dies every twelve minutes because they can’t afford health care. The piece juxtaposes my work environment against the larger economic and political trends in the United States. It also documents my aging, through the eyes of my computer.
