Amulets were traditionally made to be worn or placed in locations to promote healing, protect against evil & to bring good luck. Kabbalists made extensive use of amulets. Ancient talismanic images such as the hamsa, the fish, and the all-seeing eye inform Verwer’s series Temple Talismans. Combining these with multi-layered backgrounds and Maroccan henna-tattoo designs, these collage prints are a contemporary interpretation of an old tradition.
These images consist of photographs of collages, painted and assembled specifically for the duration of the photo session; they were destroyed afterwards, leaving the prints as the only originals.
